Bob Dylan - "Oh Mercy" (1989)

There are many things one could write about Bob Dylan. And there are many things one could write about any one of his albums.

Trouble is, it would only be things that someone has already said. I can't think of a singer that's had more stuff written about him, in terms of analysing and theorising his work.

If you want to know more details on Oh Mercy (ie how it's considered Dylan's return to form, how producer Daniel Lanois is by some credited with saving Dylan's career etc etc), I'd recommended a simple google search.

I'll just settle for pointing out how this is one of my top 5 favorite Bob Dylan albums. No, I won't tell you the other four.

always loved Shooting Star, since I heard it on Unplugged. Great (under-rated) song.

Though Lanois is great, I don't know if I'd credit anyone with "saving" Dylan's career, besides the man himself (as well as assuming that it required saving).

As evidenced by the most recent Bootleg Volume #8, Dylan's versions are often much better than Lanois'.

Well I would argue that Dylan's career needed saving indeed, since most of his output in the eighties was abysmal.

Regarding whomever saved his career... I'm not even gonna go there.

However, many have said Lanois liberated and rejuvenated Dylan's career and profile the same way Rick Rubin liberataed and rejuvated Johnny Cash's.

Whether that's the case or not, I'll leave for the scholars to discuss.
