This was all the rage on blogs when it came out about three and a half years ago. Yeah, I'm a bit slow. But I was digging around the old record collection today and I stumbled upon it and thought "Why not?".
For those who don't know, it's a compilation that was given away with Mojo Magazine in July 2006 for the 40th anniversary of The Beatles' Revolver and features fifteen artists covering one song each from the album. Each more obscure than the other. Seriously, I have no idea who these fucking people are. I'm familiar with The Handsome Family and Ed Harcourt, but the rest? Never heard of 'em. Before or since.
But I'm sure they're super famous in their own circles. I bet all those hip blogs that bore me to death have hyped at least half of them like nobody's business. Wouldn't surprise me if they've all played for tens of people (all the coolest ones) at SXSW and had someone from Twee Monthly finger them after the show. I bet they wear flannel and part their hair like Hitler and have done photoshoots with Will Oldham. One or two may have ironic moustaches and very tight pants.
Whoever the hell they are they sound good and do a fine job making these classics their own.
