Covers Month Leftover: "No Fun"

Hederos & Hellberg consists of pianist Martin Hederos (The Soundtrack of our Lives) and singer Mattias Hellberg (White Moose, The Hellacopters, Diamond Dogs).

They started performing as a duo when the other members of their band didn't show up for a gig, and soon gained a reputation for their soulful covers. No Fun is taken from their second album Together In The Darkness, on which they started branching out and included five songs of their own.

Just listen to No Fun and you'll be converted instantly. It just doesn't get much better than that.

Eddie Izzard - "Circle" (2000)

Another installment in my ongoing Eddie Izzard series.

With Circle, taped in New York City in 2000, things were beginning to slip a bit. Don't get me wrong, this is still top class stuff, but there is something missing from his earlier stuff. Exactly what I've never been able to figure out, but by the next dvd, 2003's Sexie, things were just not the same.

It's as though Izzard was tired of the whole thing, perhaps not as confident in his material, or something to that effect. But there are definitely large parts of Sexie that are downright boring and uninspired and lack direction. I'd never thought I'd say that, and there was a time when I thought Izzard could do no wrong. But apparently he can.

Or at least could, as he recently picked up the slack and has toured with class A material again over the last few years.

A couple of those uninspired moments are also present on Circle, and in many ways this is the beginning of Eddie Izzard's "millennial slump" as I like to call it.

But thankfully these moments are greatly outnumbered by the inspired ones, like Pope Man, Jesus And The Dinosaurs and the classic Death Star Canteen.

What the hell, Tom Waits? Whatcha tryin' to pull?

Shit, I knew the Tom Waits mix I posted the other day was good, but 676 downloads?

Damn.

Queens Of The Stone Age galore

The P.J. Harvey & Desert Sessions post yesterday got me nuts for all things Josh Homme, so I threw together a nice, fat mix of some Queens Of The Stone age odds and sods.

Far from complete of course, QOTSA records more than should be humanly possible, but these are some of my personal favorites. Some covers, b-sides, acoustic versions of album tracks etc ranging from 1998 to 2008.

I made a QOTSA rarities post from their Era Vulgaris album last year, so I chose not to include them and make room other songs instead. Except Christian Brothers, it's just too good to leave out.

The most shining gold nugget here is the douchebag in the audience who, after hearing a blistering version of The Doors' Not To Touch The Earth, expresses disbelief about the band playing a cover and moans about it. I guess some people are just never satisfied.

Good shit.

(zip) QOTSA Oddities Collection (80 mb)

1. Spiders and vinegaroons
2. Broken box (acoustic)
3. Six shooter (acoustic)
4. Not to touch the earth (live The Doors cover)

7. Burn the witch (acoustic)
8. Christian brothers (Elliott Smith cover)
9. Four corners (acoustic Mondo Generator cover)

Desert Sessions ♥ P.J. Harvey

To me the ultimate summertime music would be stoner rock/desert rock (whatever you wanna call it), especially from the Palm Desert scene, so I've cooked up a big ass mix of the most essential bands of said scene and it will be posted here shortly. Your definitive soundtrack to the summer of '09, no doubt.

While diving head first into the record collection for tracks to include in this mix I was reminded of the latest installment of the Desert Sessions series, Vol. 9 & 10 (2003), on which P.J. Harvey was one of the contributors. A nice little surprise for me, since I had completely forgetten that she was on that album.

So without further ado, here are the four tracks she appears on (one of which is the Josh Homme duet Crawl Home, easily one of Harvey's all time top 5 songs), as well as the Homme sung P.J. Harvey cover The Whores Hustle And The Hustlers Whore which was included as a bonus track on some editions.
(mp3) P.J. Harvey & Desert Sessions - Powdered wig machine

Tom Waits galore (again)

I posted a big fat Tom Waits mix back in December which turned out to be very popular, so here's another one.

But whereas that one mostly contained his harsher, more abrasive stuff I decided to make one based on his more sombre, mellow material. Just like the last one, if you want to know from which album each track is taken, the album covers are included with each file.

And no, there's no Time or Hold On on this mix. Why? Because I hate them.

The most addictive thing in recent memory

This may be old as shit, but I just discovered it. A nifty little flash program in which you think of a person (either living of dead, either real or fictional) and the genie Akinator figures out who you're thinking of.

It's so stupid and so awesome and more than anything: addictive. Just go here and try it yourself. Just follow the instructions on the screen.

Now here's five songs that have nothing to do with anything except they all have "addict" in the title:
(mp3) 24h Hell - Addicted (recommended!)
(mp3) K's Choice - Not an addict
(mp3) Alice In Chains - Chemical addiction
(mp3) Randy - Addicts of communication
(mp3) The Victims - Television addict

Eddie Izzard - "Dress To Kill" (1998)

Another Eddie Izzard performace (click the tag at the bottom of the post for the other three).

This one is from the Stage Door Theater in San Fransisco in 1998 and has some of his most classic bits including Cake Or Death?, The First Batallion Tranvestite Brigade and his comments on the making of Stonehenge ("Help you push? Alright, it's not far, is it?").

Top stuff, this is Eddie Izzard at the height of his powers.

(zip) Eddie Izzard - Dress To Kill (123 mb)

1. A city of snakes
2. First batallion transvestite brigade
3. The European empires
4. World War II
5. The European union
6. Old religions
7. More religions & Scooby Doo
8. Cake or death?
9. Vomitoriums & orgies
10. The action transvestite

The Simpsons - "Sing The Blues" (1990)

(a little blast from the past - previously posted on my old blog on April 19th 2007)

Well, it seems like the Simpsons movie is finally coming out. I've always liked the show, but I'm hardly a superfan who has seen every episode (I don't think I've even seen half of them). I'd buy the DVDs if I weren't spending my money on other (more important) things.

The Simpsons Sing The Blues was released in 1990, and the first single Do The Bartman (written by everyone's favorite kiddie fiddler) was a global hit. The second single, Deep Deep Trouble, also did well, but these songs perhaps gave people a skewed impression of the album.

As the title implies, the majority of it consists of our beloved Springfieldians (is that a word?) tackling old blues classics. Homer croons away in Born Under A Bad Sign, then pairs up with Marge in Randy Newman's I Love To See You Smile. Lisa takes on Billie Holidays' God Bless The Child and Marge cooks up a Springfield Soul Stew.

But the high point by far is Mr. Burns singing about being "outnumbered by boobs". Now there's an image.
(mp3) Homer Simpson - Born under a bad sign
(mp3) Homer & Marge Simpson - I love to see you smile
(mp3) Mr. Burns & Smithers - Look at all those idiots (highly recommended!)

This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time

This here Theme Mix was chosen by none other than David Merz of Mars Needs Guitars fame. And an excellent choice it was, I'm very fond of this mix.

Of the 22 (!) installments so far, this is definitely one of the best yet. Hell, anything that includes Bert Jansch is of a very high quality, but the rest is top notch as well.

And although I'm not running out inspiration - I have another nine Theme Mixes finished and waiting in the wings, and another 35 (!!!) in various stages of completion - feel free to suggest themes for future mixes in the comments.

Three cheers for Shane and his pearly yellows

Last month it surfaced that Shane MacGowan, one of music's few genuine geniuses, had finally gotten his teeth fixed. Whoever the dentist was did a great job, and Shane MacGowan now looks astonishingly un-Shane MacGowan-like.

Is it just me, or does he vaguely remind anyone else of Roger Waters now?

And just to remind us ourselves, let's take a gander at a before-picture of his "teeth":

Eddie Izzard - "Glorious" (1997)

Alrighty, more Eddie Izzard.

His 4th dvd, taped in London (at the Hammersmith Apollo nonetheless) at the height of Izzard's career in my opinion. He's still great, but between 1995 and 2000 he was on fire, every line was an instant classic.

While nothing here may be quite as classic as Cake Or Death? from Dress To Kill (1999), his thoughts on evil giraffs, Achilles with his foot in a block on concrete and unreliable toasters are close to genius.

Circle jerk

The idea was to make a mix of songs with other performers' names in the titles, but I'm not sure I achieved it. So it's a little sketchy, but it's awesome nonetheless.

I'm not entire sure Ozzy, Beach Boys and Isolation Years are really named after Ozzy Osbourne, The Beach Boys and Isolation Years, but I'm pretty sure they are.

Also, R.A.M.O.N.E.S. was a song written by Motörhead as a tribute to The Ramones, which is here covered by The Ramones so it's not technically about another artist. With The Ramones playing it it's more about themselves, isn't it? But whatever, it's a good song so that's that.

On the same note there is Motörhead (here in Primal Scream's version) which was written by Lemmy Kilmister while he was still in Hawkwind, and his next band would be named after the song. So it's not really about Motörhead, the band was just named after it.

But whatever.

Eddie Izzard - "Definite Article" (1996)

Another stellar Eddie Izzard performance, this time his second best show, in my opinion. The best one, Glorious from 1997, will be posted here shortly.

This was Izzard's first show after his breakthrough with Unrepeatable two years prior. As a result, this took place at a much bigger venue, the Shaftesbury Theatre in London.

Great show, has some of his classics bits, such as the queue of murderers, Mohammed Ali vs. George Formby and skiing elephants.
