Obama made me do it + My favorite song at the moment

I scoff in the face of Fluxblog! I wipe my bottom with stereogum! Gorilla Vs. Bear does my laundry! 3hive is my pool boy! You know what aurgasm does when I say "jump"? It says "How high, o humble master?", that's fucking what.

I got over a thousand visitor/day, beeyotches!

But alas, those were all people strolling in from the Hype Machine after that Obama audio clip I posted, and they stopped coming after the Obama file went off the "popular" chart of HM.

Ah well. At least I'll always have the pleasure of looking at that graph and seeing my visitor count plummit into oblivion and my pathetic blog fade back to the dark corners of the internet to suffer an obscure existence for the remainder of its feeble days.

But enough about that: Ever stumble over a song out of nowhere and fall madly in love with it? That one song that suddenly becomes the most amazing thing you've ever experienced, if only for a moment?

Of course you have. That's why you love music, that's why you read mp3 blogs.

For me that song is currently Look What I Made Out Of My Head, Ma by British singer/songwriter Pete Molinari. Yes, it's derivative, yes, it's a four and a half minute Bob Dylan ripoff, I know all that, go fuck yourself.

It's flawless. Flawless.

I want to fellate this song and snuggle up against its warm, manly chest.

The Posies galore

If the soundtrack to my early 90's was Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Metallica, the soundtrack to my late 90's was Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, Hole and Seattle pop kings The Posies.

My first encounter was a live show recorded in early 1996 (on the European leg of their Amazing Disgrace tour) at the club Gino in Stockholm which aired on the Swedish radio station P3 a month or so later. Having read glowing reviews of Amazing Disgrace, The Posies got my attention and I made sure to tape the show (I still have the tape!) and I've lost count of how many times I've listened to it. From the opening chords of Dream All Day to the Nirvana/Jimi Hendrix/The Who style instrument destruction at the end of Burn & Shine, every damn second was mesmerizing.

In the summer of 1996 I was 14 years old and deemed not old enough to stay at home alone when the parents went on vacation to Dalarna in their old caravan, so I had no choice but to tag along. That summer, the tape of the Gino show became my one trusted ally against the entire world (or at least it felt that way, but it always feels that way when you're 14, doesn't it?). I bought Amazing Disgrace at a big department store chain called OBS!, but alas I could not listen to it straight away for my parents did not own a cd player, and I had to wait two long, painful weeks until I could pop it into my stereo system at home and crank up the volume.

But at least I could listen to some of the songs on my new favorite tape - Throwaway, Precious Moments, Please Return It, Everybody Is A Fucking Liar, World and Grant Hart were all played at that Gino show. Grant Hart (named after the drummer of Hüsker Dü) quickly became my favorite song and I remember being a bit disappointed when I came home and realised the album version didn't sound as rough and pissed off. One day, once I've figure out how to rip a cassette tape and make mp3s out of it, I'm gonna post that whole damn show, because it's beyond belief. Maybe it's just adolescent nostalgia speaking, but it really is one of the best thing I have ever heard. Ever.

After listening to Amazing Disgrace constantly for months, I ordered the two previous albums, Dear 23 (1990) and Frosting On The Beater (1993), from the mail order service MBM (Music By Mail), which in those days provided me with all the great music I couldn't otherwise get a hold of in this shitty little pre-Internet town of mine. A few years later their fifth album Success was released, and it was announced this was The Posies' last album. They stopped by Stockholm again in the summer of 1998 to play a gig at the Stockholm Water Festival. I planned to attend, but nothing ever came of it.

The two singers, guitarists, frontmen and song writers Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer soon thereafter went their separete ways, both persuing solo projects. After a while though, the former best friends gravitated back towards each other and started doing acoustic gigs as a duo (documented on the In Case You Didn't Feel Like Plugging In live album).

Soon they had formed a new band with a new rhythm section and released new material. To be honest, by then I had lost interest. I haven't heard their post reunion stuff (but then again I haven't even heard their debut album Failure either), but I'm sure they are brilliant. It's just that to me, The Posies made four spectular albums before dying in 1999. I guess I outgrew them or something.

Here follows three songs each from of the four Posies albums that shaped my late teens:

Dear 23, 1990 (aka "The Pretty Album")

(mp3) Any other way (recommended!)
(mp3) Everyone moves away
(mp3) Flood of sunshine

Frosting On The Beater, 1993 (aka "The Best Album")

(mp3) Love letter boxes
(mp3) How she lied by living
(mp3) Coming right along (recommended!)

Amazing Disgrace, 1996 (aka "The Bitter Album")

(mp3) Daily mutilation
(mp3) Precious moments (recommended!)
(mp3) Song #1

Success, 1998 (aka "The Farewell Album")

(mp3) Grow

Queens Of The Stone Age galore (again)

After my Queens Of The Stone Age rarities compilation a month ago (click the "Desert Rock" tag at the bottom of this post to find it) I felt compelled to make another one.

So without further ado, here's another 19 tracks of non-album material, the QOTSA Oddities Collection Volume 2. I have yet another 19 tracks lying around so expect a third volume within a week or so.

Volume 2 includes QOTSA's perhaps best song, Infinity, recorded for the Heavy Metal 2000 soundtrack. It was re-recorded during the Lullabies To Paralyze sessions in 2004. That version, which is not as good as this one, will be included in Volume 3.

(zip) QOTSA Oddities Collection Vol. 2 (80 mb)

1. This lullaby (Josh version, 2005)
2. Like a drug (2005)
3. White wedding (Billy Idol cover) (2007)

The root of all evil

The word "money" is believed to originate from a temple of Hera, located on Capitoline, one of Rome's seven hills. In the ancient world Hera was often associated with money. The temple of Juno Moneta at Rome was the place where the mint of Ancient Rome was located.

The name "Juno" may derive from the Etruscan goddess Uni (which means "the one", "unique", "unit", "union", "united") and "Moneta" either from the Latin word "monere" (remind, warn, or instruct) or the Greek word "moneres" (alone, unique). In the Western world, a prevalent term for coin-money has been specie, stemming from Latin in specie, meaning "in kind".

Time Now + Doing what?, Comparisons can be curious...

I waited 'til I saw the sun
I don't know why I didn't come
I left you by the house of fun
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come

When I saw the break of day
I wished that I could fly away
Instead of kneeling in the sand
Catching teardrops in my hand

My heart is drenched in wine
But you'll be on my mind
Forever

Blue moon of Kenfucky

Blå blauw bleu blau μπλε 藍色 蓝色 blu 青い 파란 azul голубо.

Big thanks to Merz for handpicking this classy mix (whether he was aware that he did it or not), and thanks to Babelfish for giving this post an international slant.

UPDATE JULY 20TH: Did you come here via the Hype Machine looking for New Order's Blue Monday?

Tough luck, brother. I deleted it today because it broke up the flow of the mix and replaced it with The Black Crowes' Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye which is not only a much better song, but fits in a lot better with the rest of the tracks.

Metal Bastard's Desert Rock Collection

One year ago today Natasha Shneider died, which was more traumatic than Michael Jackson snuffing it, that's for damn sure. Because unlike Wacko Jacko who burned out 20 years ago, Natasha still had much to offer.

For most of her active music career she played in the sadly overlooked band Eleven with her husband Alain Johannes and together they formed what was probably the my favorite musical couple of all time.

The two of them also collaborated on Chris Cornell's magnificent 1999 solo debut Euphoria Morning and played a big part in that album turning out as well as it did. Shneider & Johannes would also frequently work with musicians from the Palm Desert scene, which brings us to today's flawless mix.

I've put put together a zip file of some of my favorite songs by the most important bands of this scene. This is one of the more incestuous music scenes known to man, with everyone playing in a number of bands, to the point where it's sometimes difficult to determine where one band ends and another begins. It's also defined by a remarkably relaxed approach, where the music itself and the creation of it was more important and any rock star dreams. I guess that happens naturally when you live out in the desert and spend most of your days smoking weed and avoiding scorpions.

While a lot of the bands often incorporate elements of any music they happen to like, whether it's blues, pop, surf, psychedelia, Latin, etc., the Palm Desert bands have a common link in the riff heavy bands of the 70s and the punk bands of the 70s and early 80s. A lot of these bands, if not all them, are somehow connected to the mythical studio Rancho De La Luna, situated in the middle of nowhere in the deserts of south east California.

I'll do my best to explain how they all relate to one another.

Eagles Of Death Metal: First appeared on the Desert Sessions album Vol. 3 & 4 in 1998 and consisted of Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, Desert Sessions, Mondo Generator) and his childhood friend Jesse Hughes. The debut album Peace Love Death Metal was released in 2004.

Brant Bjork & The Bros: Brant Bjork's music career was kicked off when he played drums in Kyuss between 1989 and 1993, at which point he left and was replaced by Alfredo Hernández (Queens of the Stone Age, Orquesta del Desierto, Mondo Generator, Ché, Brant Bjork & The Bros). He then went solo and became a frontman, releases a number of records.

Orquesta del Desierto: Formed in 2002 and features Dandy Brown of Hermano, Mario Lalli of Yawning Man and Fatso Jetson, and at one point featured Alfredo Hernández. Also featured Pete Stahl (Desert Sessions, Queens of the Stone Age).

Yawning Man: The godfathers of the Palm Desert Scene, forming as early as 1986 and were the main influence for bands like Kyuss. Features Gary Arce (Ten East, Fatso Jetson), Mario Lalli (Orquesta del Desierto, Fatso Jetson) and Alfredo Hernández and once featured Billy Cordell from Unida.

Kyuss: The definitive stoner rock/desert rock band, the one who put the place, the scene and the genre on the map. Existed between 1989 and 1995 and featured such Palm Desert alumni as Josh Homme, John Garcia (Slo Burn, Unida, Hermano), Scott Reeder (Unida), Nick Oliveri (Queens of the Stone Age, Desert Sessions, Mondo Generator) and drummers Brant Bjork & Alfredo Hernández.

Fu Manchu: Stoner rock legends in which Brant Bjork played drums between 1997 and 2002. Fu Macnhu now features drummer Scott Reeder who should not be confused with the Kyuss/Unida bassist of the same name.

Hermano: After Kyuss split up, singer John Garcia formed the band Slo Burn. After that fell apart he first formed Unida, and then his current band Hermano which features Dandy Brown of Orquesta del Desierto.

Mark Lanegan: Came into prominence as the singer of Screaming Trees, which for a short while featured Josh Homme on rhythm guitar. Has worked with Queens of the Stone Age, Desert Sessions, Mondo Generator, Masters of Reality etc.

Queen of the Stone Age: Formed by Kyuss guitarist Josh Homme after leaving Screaming Trees in 1997 and the first line up consisted of Screaming Trees bassist Van Connor and Alfredo Hernández. QOTSA has at one point or another featured most people mentioned in this post.

Masters Of Reality: Was formed by singer/guitarist Chris Goss (who produced several of Kyuss' albums) in 1986. Has featured among others Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri and Mark Lanegan.

Mondo Generator: Was formed by Nick Oliveri in 1997 and has featured Dave Catching (Queens of the Stone Age, Desert Sessions, earthlings?, Eagles of Death Metal), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Queens of the Stone Age, earthlings?), Mark Lanegan, Josh Homme and Alfredo Hernández.

Desert Sessions: A loosely formed project orchestrated by Josh Homme. Their first release, Vol 1 & 2, came out in 1997 and featured members of Monster Magnet and Soundgarden. On the ten volumes released so far Desert Sessions has, not unlike QOTSA, featured nearly everyone mentioned in this post at one point or any other.

Fatso Jetson: Formed in 1994 by Yawning Man members Mario and Larry Lalli. The band once featured Brant Bjork on rhytm guitar and has been produced by both Schneebie of earthlings? and Chris Goss.

earthlings?: Formed in 1994 and featured Fred Drake, the owner of the aforementioned Rancho De La Luna, until his untimely death in 2002. Also features Dave Catching (who currently runs and lives at Rancho De La Luna), Gene Trautmann (Queens of the Stone Age), Molly McGuire (Mondo Generator, Queens of the Stone Age, Mark Lanegan), and Pete Stahl.

Ché: A shortlived side project formed in 2000 by Dave Dinsmore (Unida), Alfredo Hernández and Brant Bjork. Released their only album Sounds of Liberation the same year.

Nebula: A band formed in 1997 by Eddie Glass and Ruben Romano after they left Fu Manchu. Once featured Scott Reeder (Kyuss) on bass, and now features Rob Oswald (Mondo Generator) on drums.

Ten East: A desert rock supergroup consisting of Gary Arce, Brant Bjork, Mario Lalli and others.

Unida: Formed after the split up of Kyuss and Slo Burn, and featured Kyuss members John Garcia and Scott Reeder.

Phew! Damn, that was as exhausting as it was confusing. Did you really read the whole thing? Did you make any sense of it? If so, you have my respect.

Ah well, enough of that, let's move on to the music, which to me is the ultimate summer music. Maybe it's the desert thing, but I always felt these bands worked better in the summertime when the sun is burning on your face so badly you can almost feel the desert breeze and the sand in your hair and all you want to do is have some tequila, jam some mellow tunes and watch the sunset.
