An Oasis comparison

I was a big fan of Britpop and Mars Needs Guitars' brilliant exposé of said phenomenon rekindled my love for all things British. A fool of an Anglophile am I.

After downloading all of Merz' Britpop tracks I went ahead and watched the documentary Live Forever for 2,508,173th time and dug out some old records. One of these was a collection of early Oasis demos from 1992, and Rock 'N' Roll Star immediately stood out from the rest.

Mostly because of Liam's highly insecure (yes, insecure!) vocal delivery. He's a young lad (only 20 at the time) who music lovers got to know as a sneering, obnoxious, too cocky for his own good kinda guy. For all we knew he was born that way and here he is only two years before his band's big breakthrough sounding like a little scared school boy terrified of the microphone.

The characteristic raspy voice is there, but there is almost a complete lack of attitude. If anything, he sounds almost apologetic, like he's asking us to do him a favor and listen to his band for a minute.

Who would have thought there was once a human living inside that hard Brummie shell?

In the middle of night (she wakes me up and then we do it one more time)

I left my gal sad and lonely, left her standing in the rain
I went down to the railroad, I caught myself a midnight train
I beat my way into Texas, landed in a gambling town
I got myself into trouble, I shot the county sheriff down

Oh Lord, I shot the county sheriff down

They put the handcuffs on me, tied me with a ball and chain
They took me to El Paso, they tied me with a ball and chain
These prison bars all around me, no-one to call my bail
My heart's sad and so lonely, I want to get out of this jail

Oh Lord, I want to get out of this jail

The jury read the verdict, murder in the first degree
The judge said, take this prisoner to the penitentiary
They put the handcuffs on me, tied me with a ball and chain
I'd left my home forever and I'll never see my gal again

Oh Lord, I'll never see my gal again

Queens of the Stone Age galore (again again)

As promised, the third and last Queens Of The Stone Age rarities collections. Click the "Desert Rock" at the bottom of the post to find the other two.

This one has some of my favorites, like the Brian Eno cover Needle In The Camel's Eye (which elegantly slides into The Velvet Underground's I'm Waiting For My Man), the 2005 version of Infinity (which doesn't beat the 2000 version, but is still very good), the ZZ Top cover Precious And Grace and the excellent live version of A Song For The Dead.

There's also a third version of the fan favorite Born To Hula, and this is probably the best one.

A salute to my Finnish friends (in particular Tomi The Beardless Love Cow)

Earlier this morning I was leaving a comment on someone's blog when Blogger's random word verification thingy made me type "perse". Evidence provided above. Epic lulz.

If you don't speak Finnish, just take my word for it: This is very funny.

Almost as funny as when Facebook's security check told me to "oil Richard". I most certainly will not! Unless he buys me a drink first.

Weeping Willows x 2 (x4?)

I'm sorry for the lack of updates around here lately but I've been busy with work, the almighty countdown and moving my bazillion records, dvds and books to my new apartment.

But here's two giant zip files of one of my all time favorite bands, Weeping Willows. Click that link for band info. A sadly overlooked band that deserves more attention, and perhaps this post will help at least a little.

The first zip file includes their first two albums, Broken Promise Land (1997) and Endless Night (1999), both total masterpieces. Simply two of the best albums ever made.

The second zip contains their third album Into The Light (2002), and the 2005 rarities compilation Singles Again.

Both of these zips are extremely recommended. They're quite big and might take a while to download, but trust me: it will be worth it.

Only music cures the blues, part deux

Back in January I posted a Boredom Mix, in other words something I threw together because I was bored and needed something to do to lift my spirits. Feeling the same blues once again, I made another one today.

I'm not sure what, if anything, these songs have in common other than that they fit together and seem to thrive in each other's company.

I suppose they all have certain darkness to them. A melancholy, a feeling of desolation. The good kind of melancholy though, not the one were you depressed as shit and everything sucks and you wish you'd die.

No, I mean the type of melancholy that feels quite comfortable. Ever seen Lost in Translation? That's the mood what I'm talking about. Being gloomy and a little distant but feeling kinda good about. As it happens, Lost in Translation featured one of the songs on this mix. No prizes for guessing which one though.
