A large landform that stretches above the surrounding land in a limited area usually in the form of a peak. A mountain is generally steeper than a hill. The adjective montane is used to describe mountainous areas and things associated with them. The study of mountains is "orology".

A Blast From The Past: Monkey Bastard's Mix Vol. 16

I'm lacking a bit in inspiration at the moment, so I'll repost something old.

Aeons ago (March 2007) I started my first blog, Monkey Bastard's MP3 Blahg. About four people read it. three people, not counting myself. On that blog I used to post mixes with 15 tracks each every Monday and Friday, and I kept doing it here too for a while before I started doing mixes with themes.

This one, volume sixteen, was posted on June 11th 2007 to GLOWING REVIEWS! And by that I mean three people left comments saying they liked it.

It's good enough to post again, so enjoy. I has an awful lot of tracks from 2006 on it though. Not sure what that's about.

Wicked game

Oh my god, I'm posting Peter Jöback, what the fuck is wrong with me? It would appear I've gone off the deep end once and for all.

For anyone who doesn't know, Jöback is a Swedish dork well-known for his work in various musicals and for being a harmless goody two-shoes that makes Josh Groban look like Charles Manson.

A while back he decided to take a break from everything and moved to New York where he of course felt reborn and decided to go to Woodstock and record some of his favorite songs to celebrate his new lease on life. An admirable ambition, it's just too bad he had no idea what he was doing.

On East Side Stories, truly one of the strangest records of 2009, he rapes one classic after another, from Radiohead's No Surprises, The Verve's The Drugs Don't Work and R.E.M.'s Everybody Hurts (featuring Declan O'Rourke... how the fuck did that happen?) to Depeche Mode's Somebody, America's A Horse With No Name and many others. Without any sort of subtlety he effectively uses his overblown Broadway wannabe voice to make each song sound like he's auditioning for The Phantom Of The Opera.

But the cover of Chris Isaak's Wicked Game is not too fucking bad, though it pains me to admit it. Australian singer Sia Furler, perhaps most known for the song Breathe Me and her work with Zero 7, contributes vocals and is the main reason the cover sounds as good as it does. Nothing earth-shattering, but a nice reworking with Spaghetti western trumpets and stuff.

Maybe Sia can be talked into recording a cover of it by herself? Or what if they can just take Jöback's vocals off it and release that instead? That would be awesome.

The Band - "S/t" (1969, re-post)

First they back up Ronnie Hawkins during several hell raising, booze swilling, groupie banging, rocking and rolling years. Then they work with Bob Dylan during the first Awesome Bob Dylan Era (there's been at least five such eras) in the mid 60's. Then they release the best debut album of all time (Music From Big Pink) in 1968.

Three simple little career steps that had already put them in the rock & roll hall of fame for the rest of eternity. Where do you go from there? What would your next move be? What could you possibly muster that would compare to any one of those three endevours, let alone all three?

You just go into a studio and record the single greatest album ever recorded by anyone in the history of music. A monolith of a record that musicians worldwide have been failing to recreate for four decades.
