Oh, what's in a name?

Women - the inspiration of all writers throughout the ages. Well, all male ones at least. Or most of them anyway. And some female writers too.

The list of songs with a girl's name in the title is almost endless and I couldn't possibly squeeze all my favorites into one mix, so Volume 2 will be posted some time in the future.

I made myself a similar mix a few years back (titled Just Like a Woman)... and I don't think we have any duplications - endless indeed!

I'm intrigued - what songs did you choose to include?

Okay... one duplication - my tracklist is as follows:

1. She Drives Me Crazy ~ Fine Young Cannibals
2. Amoreena ~ Elton John
3. Maggie May ~ Rod Stewart
4. Anna Begins ~ Counting Crows
5. Melissa ~ Allman Brothers
6. Roxanne ~ The Police
7. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds ~ The Beatles
8. Gloria ~ Van Morrison
9. Suzanne ~ Leonard Cohen
10. Layla ~ Eric Clapton
11. The Wind Cries Mary ~ Jimi Hendrix
12. Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) ~ Bruce Springsteen
13. Jane ~ Barenaked Ladies
14. Lola ~ The Kinks
15. 867-5309/Jenny ~ Tommy Tutone
16. My Sharona ~ The Knack
17. Just Like a Woman ~ Bob Dylan

As you say, soooo many more possibilities - I wouldn't be surprised if your Volumes got into the double-digits!

Wow, nice selection! I see you got Layla too, good choice. Can't go wrong with that one, if the middle section does go on a bit longer than I'd like it.

I have Cohen's Suzanne lined up for Volume 2, other than that we have no other duplications!

Endless indeed.

Call me pedantic, but I'm not sure Jeff Buckley's "Grace" is actually referring to a girl's name. I always though it referred to the er... 'state' of grace. I've checked the lyrics, and to be fair, it could go either way... but I maintain that your inclusion of it here is dubious.

Yeah I wasn't sure either, but I decided to include it anyway.

I don't think "Colinda" refers to a girl either to be honest.

My friend Ralston wrote a beautiful song titled Grace - what I love about it is that at first it seems to be about a woman... but, as it unfolds, the double-meaning becomes clearer. Lyrics here:
