Remember back in '94 when Pulp Fiction came out and suddenly surf music became cool? Thanks to Quentin Tarantino including the likes of The Lively Ones, Dick Dale, The Centurions and The Impacts, this long lost genre that no one had cared about for 25 years was the shit for about a moment and a half.
Robert Johnson and his merry gang of roughnecks The Punchdrunks released this their second album two years later and got quite good reviews for what they themselves called "tropical exotic rock". Boxing enthusiast Johnson shows off his fascination with Muhammad Ali with tracks such as Ali Boom A Lay, and the album was recorded during something called "Rope-A-Dope sessions". Their third album, 1997's Aloha From Havana, had songs like Do The Punch and Thrilla In Manilla.
Feels Like Buzz Aldrin was recorded in mono with all the levels deep in the red. The distortion rips at your eardrums in some of the most ass-kicking intrumental rock 'n' roll ever recorded. It's sweaty, feverish, horny, violent, furious and ferocious. It's surf rock all coked up and with a thirst for blood.
Imagine four people losing their minds on a mezcal & tequila binge being so pissed off at their instruments they're trying to beat them to death while the tape's running.
Imagine the motion picture soundtrack to Tony Montana vs. James Bond.
Imagine the sound of Lux Interior and Larry Parypa taking turns buggering Link Wray behind a burning whorehouse in Shanghai.
