The city so nice they named it twice

When making a mix of New York songs there are a million ways to go about it. The songs written for and about the capital of the world are countless, so I decided to only include songs that explicitly mention the city in the title.

It feels a bit weird in this wonderful spring time of year to include Autumn In New York and New York Is A Christmas Kind Of Town, but they're both too good to exclude.

(zip) Metal Bastard's New York Songs (68 mb)

1. Friday Hyvönen - N.Y. (2005)
2. Ryan Adams - New York New York (2001)
3. David Hasselhoff - New York, New York (Frank Sinatra cover, 2004)

Yeah we're like playing the same song and stuff, y'know? (Part 4)

Another installment in this disappointing series. This time: Tainted Love! Woohoo!

By the way, did you know Gloria Jones was Marc Bolan's girlfriend and when he died in a car crash, she was the one behind the wheel?

I didn't.

Yeah we're like playing the same song and stuff, y'know? (Part 3)

We started this feature with a great Smokey Robinson track, and here's an even better one.

A hit for The Temptations in 1966, but Smokey himself did the definitive version four years later.

A soldier is a member of the land component of national armed forces; whereas a soldier hired for service in a foreign army would be termed a mercenary. In most languages, "soldier" includes commissioned and non-commissioned officers in national land forces.

Yeah we're like playing the same song and stuff, y'know? (Part 2)

Let's continue the Nick Cave theme from this morning with the second installment in our cumbersomely titled series "Yeah we're like playing the same song and stuff, y'know?".

This time: Hey Joe, originally performed in 1965 by The Leaves and immortalized by Jimi Hendrix a year later.

(mp3) Warlocks - Hey Joe
Recorded in 1966. Available on Sixties Archives Vol. 7 (2006)

(mp3) Cher - Hey Joe

Born into a manger/Like some ragged stranger

There's no particular point to this post, I just thought the relative similarity of these two song titles was funny.

What does Kira Roessler have to do with any of this? Nothing. She's just hot.

(mp3) Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Stranger than kindness
Available on Your Funeral... My Trial (1986)

Yeah we're like playing the same song and stuff, y'know? (Part 1)

Hello and welcome to what may become a recurring feature on this blog: "Yeah we're like playing the same song and stuff, y'know?".

I really should think of a snappier title, shouldn't I?

I suppose this is a slightly different take on Cover Month from last April, just not as strict or structured. Or indeed as thorough. Or as exciting. It's just different people playing the same song, so don't get your panties in a twist.

First off: Smokey Robinson's You've Really Got A Hold On Me. Covered by many people, including these:

(mp3) The Beatles - You really got a hold on me
Available on With The Beatles (1963)

(mp3) The Small Faces - You've really got a hold on me
Available on From The Beginning (1967)

(mp3) She & Him - You really got a hold on me
Available on Volume One (2008)

Laika & The Cosmonauts - "C'mon Do The Laika!" (1988)

I posted Robert Johnson & Punchdrunks the other week, and just for the hell of it here's some more surf rock from Finland's Laika & The Cosmonauts.

Random facts:

  • They've been around for over twenty years and have released six studio albums, two compilations and a live album. Oh, and a DVD too.
  • They combine the sunny surf sounds of California with the melancholy of Finnish rautalanka.
  • They once toured the U.S. supporting instrustrial metal band Ministry.
  • The surf king himself, Dick Dale, thinks they're awesome.

    That'll do.
