Jandek Galore, or Our Man From Corwood

Jandek - the very definition of "acquired taste".

I've written about the Texan eccentric several times, and my 2009 project In Pursuit Of Jandek was one of the most rewarding things I've ever done on any of my blogs.

This rather lengthy article right here probably sums up most of my feelings about Jandek. Take a couple of minutes and read it, I think it's quite good.

The great 2003 documentary about the man, Jandek On Corwood, can be watched on YooToob right here. Very recommended viewing, and I think you'll see the man's music in a different light after watching it.

2010 marks the 32nd anniversary of Jandek's debut album Ready For The House, so to honor this occasion I offer you samples from 32 of his albums. All of them can be purchased directly from Jandek by writing to the P.O. box adress at the top of this post.

Feelin' shitty in the city/Nothing to do/With poo under my shoe/Doobie doobie doo

A city is a relatively large and permanent urban settlement.

Although there is no agreement on how a city is distinguished from a town within general English language meanings, many cities have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law.

Yeah we're like playing the same song and stuff, y'know? (Part 9)

Is there a way that the bowl can play This Mortal Coil's It'll End in Tears album while I'm eating it at 2:00 in the morning in my darkened apartment, just kind of staring into the middle distance?

I just got out my little red book the minute that you said goodbye

Making these mixes with girls' names in the title (and only a girl's name in the title) is not as easy as it sounds. There are thousands and thousands of songs like this, but I don't want to use the same name twice within the same mix and a lot of these songs use the same name. There's an awful lot of songs about Marys, Sarahs, Dianas and so on.

On this one I wanted Hello Saferide's Anna as track #7 because it flowed into Freinds' Jaqueline perfectly. But alas I had already decided to use The Beatles' Anna on this mix. So Hello Saferide had to be put on the backburner for possible inclusion on Volume 4.

O the woes of the mixtaper. You have no idea.

Download volume 1 here.
Download volume 2 here.

Silver&Crimson Vol. 33

Hi, I was just on your site and I know this may be an unusual request but I was hoping you might let me send you a piece of jewelry from my store (complimentary of course). I was hoping you might be able to post your honest thoughts (good, bad or ugly) on your blog, even if it's just a really brief mention it would really help me promote my store. If you're ok with this let me know and I'll email you a gift card which would allow you to choose any item free. Hope I haven't wasted your time! Best Wishes,Sarah

Merz' Britpop Extravaganza Vol. 1 and 2

Almost exactly one year ago, Merz of the excellent blog Mars Needs Guitars went on an impressive trek through Britpop country. Over a couple of months he posted songs from sixty albums by dozens of bands, both obscure ones and those internationally famous, from that wonderful era of British rock.

All of which I downloaded and nerded out over of course, as this is the music I grew up listening to. Having been a couple of years too young to fully experience the whole grunge thing, when Britpop hit for real in the mid-90s it was amazing for an identity-seeking young whippersnapper to witness the explosion (and exploitation) of a music scene as it was happening, right then and there.

I don't know about the rest of the world, but in most of Europe these bands were everywhere. For a few years this was pretty much all you heard wherever you went and I loved every second of it. I couldn't even get enough of bands like Menswear and Sleeper, which never seemed to get much love from anyone else.

As a tribute to both Merz and Britpop I have compiled my favorite ones into two volumes.

Mars Needs Guitars was one of maybe three or four mp3 blogs that inspired me to make one of my own. MNG made a triumphant comback last year after being down for some time. Now it appears to be down again. The updates stopped in September last year, and now all it says is "I'm Nothing". I don't know where Merz is or what he's up to, but I hope he's alright. A true gentleman and a true musical gourmand.

Give us a sign you're still out there, will ya?
