Great songs of the 00s (Part 42)

Just had a nice pizza and some kickin' cider (Kopparberg's Apple Cider 7% ftw) and today my new washing machine will be delivered. I'm just gonna sit here buzzing with my thumb up my ass and do laundry all night. I'm on my last pair of clean underpants.

Life is good. Oh yeah, baby. Life is good.

The image of Karl Pilkington at the top of this post just reminded me of something: You're watching An Idiot Abroad on Sky, aren't you? If you can't get Sky, just download torrents of the five episodes (of eight) that have aired so far. Episode six airs tomorrow night.

Cunding brilliant. Perhaps the best tv show ever.

Great songs of the 00s (Part 41)

Whatever happened to Khonnor? After a couple of online releases (as "I, Cactus" and "Grandma") Conor Kirby-Long released Handwriting, his first album as Khonnor, at the age of 17. He'd recorded it at 16, secretly in his basement with shitty equipment.

Apart from a single or two, he hasn't released a proper follow-up to Handwriting. There would be no point anyway I suppose, as this album is as sublime as anything you could imagine. Truly one of the best albums of the last few decades, I must've listened to it hundreds of times and I never get sick of it. The one song I got here doesn't do it justice, you really gotta hear the whole thing. Perfect for this time of year too, great for crisp winter days. If you're lucky enough to have those.

If you can find it, download the Khonnor episode of MTV Europe's This Is Our Music from 2004 in which a documentary crew follow Khonnor and his friends around their hometown of Saint Johnsbury, Vermont.

There's a torrent on the bay of pirates but it doesn't seem to be working right now. Keep an eye out for it though, it's brilliant.

(mp3) Khonnor - Daylight and delight
Available on Handwriting (2004)

(mp3) DJ Format feat. Abdominal - The hit song
Available on Music For The Mature B-Boy (2003)

(mp3) Doug Stanhope - School shootings

(mp3) Spiritualized - Lord can you hear me

(mp3) Ane Brun - My lover will go
Available on A Temporary Dive (2005)

Great songs of the 00s (Part 39)

Lancashire hotpot is a dish made traditionally from lamb or mutton and onion, topped with sliced potatoes, left to bake in the oven all day in a heavy pot and on a low heat. Originating in the days of heavy industrialization in Lancashire in the north west of England, it requires a minimum of effort to prepare.

It is sometimes served at parties in England, because it is easy to prepare for a large number of people and is relatively inexpensive.

Great songs of the 00s (Part 38)

The 00s were not only a great decade for music, but also a great decade for movies. But that's an obvious thing to say, there's been fuckloads of great shit in every decade.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and The Return Of The King were both monumental film experiences in two completely different ways. And yes, I cried during both. So this post contains a song from each of them.

Since I know how much my opinion means to you, I shall share with you a list of some of the movies that rocked my world over the last ten years. These are films you are meant to watch. You may have missed some of them as the decade has whizzed past, but it's never too late to catch up.

For the sake of conveniences sake I've narrowed it down to one film per director. Apart from the case of Tomas Alfredson, as I simply had to include both Let The Right One In and Four Shades Of Brown, two of the best movies I have ever seen in my entire life.

The Friday MP3 Shuffle #85

This week's fantastic mix (they're all fantastic, aren't they?) opens with the title track from the 23rd best album of the 00s. There's also a track by At The Drive-In who made the 10th best album of the 00s.

And some Giant Squid, who you all surely remember from last week's mix. And we have a bit of Om, previously discussed here. And so on and so forth.

I'm so good at making mixes it's ridiculous. Record labels should hire me to put together compilations for them, and they would be truly be the greatest compilations the world had seen.

Modesty is the only thing I'm not good at.

Great songs of the 00s (Part 37)

I didn't understand the point of Missy Elliot until I heard Gossip Folks. What a beast of a song that is - great video too. Those three little breakdance girls are awesome, I want to adopt all of them. Ludacris impersonating Timmy? Far out.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've liked a Missy Elliot song since. Hmm.

Great songs of the 00s (Part 34)

I can't think of anything to write here. Except perhaps that today was one of the least rewarding days of my life.

It must be at least fifteen years since I've been so endlessly bored and frustrated for a whole day.

Fuck you, October 18th 2010. I'm glad you're almost over.

Great songs of the 00s (Part 33)

As with the Jim Gaffigan track the other day, the George Carlin one (though it is indeed great) isn't technically a song. It's one of his signature rants from the book Brain Droppings from 1997, but the audiobook version from which it's taken was released in 2000.

May I also recommend the glitchy electronica of Forss? I think I do.

(mp3) George Carlin - Stuff

Great songs of the 00s (Part 32)

This is the installment where I tell you to check out the Scanian disco of Familjen and lush amazingness of Nicole Atkins. The pipes on that woman could resurrect the dead.

Randy's anti-cop/anti-authority/anti-anyone anthem A Man In Uniform musn't be missed either.

Great songs of the 00s (Part 30)

Oh man, nobody knew where this screenshot was taken from. It was of course from The Legend of Kyrandia. A bit too obscure perhaps.

So let's try an easier one this time - I expect at least someone to get it. Take a look at the image at the top of this post. What game is that from?

Great songs of the 00s (Part 29)

Yeah yeah yeah, I realise the Jim Gaffigan one isn't actually a "song" per se. I should've called this feature Great Tracks Of The 00s.

The Khoma track is great, and so is the one by Säkert! (aka Hello Saferide).

Great songs of the 00s (Part 27)

The astute of you will have noticed by now that I've crammed in songs by Swedish artists in every one of these posts. That's the patriot in me. Didn't even know I had one of those in me.

This time it's Teddybears STHLM waving the blue and yellow flag. 666 Skulls, anyone?

Great songs of the 00s (Part 26)

Thåström's salute to the late Gun Club frontman Jeffrey Lee Pierce is the one I'd recommend in this the 26th installment of this series. From the looks of it there'll be at least another 26. At least - this shit will never end, homeboy.

Nicolai Dunger is pretty damn sweet too, surely Europe's own Ryan Adams. The Outkast one is excellent as well, and don't miss the amazing Night Of A Thousand Kisses by Mia Doi Todd. Bloc Party's So Here We Are is ace too.

So yeah, they're ALL good. Download all five. Then get the whole albums like a normal person, and make sure you pay for them. Don't be a moocher. And don't forget to check out 666 Skulls, it's brilliant. After all, 666 Skulls is the reason I've been decorating these wonderful posts with skulls all week. A little tribute.

(mp3) Nicolai Dunger - Hunger

The Friday MP3 Shuffle #83

This week's Friday mp3 mix is quite sneaky.

It starts off relatively mainsteam and easy listening for the first five or six tracks just to sucker you in before it takes a sharp turn about halfway through and becomes a bit of a noise fest.

I'm a genius.

2. Stone Sour - Made of scars (2007)

13. Sepultura feat. Mike Patton & Jonathan Davis - Lookaway (1996)

Pay for your music, loser.

Great songs of the 00s (Part 25)

Good shit in this edition. As in all of them of course. The blue-eyed soul of The Solution and Dungen's proggy whatever are probably my favorites on this one. Alt-country rockers Hyacinth House damn good too.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot: 666 Skulls. Click it.

Great songs of the 00s (Part 24)

I've told you about the blog 666 Skulls, so I've done my part. Your part is to click that link and check it out. Because it's awesome.

Today I recommend Above The Candystore by Paola. Some of you may know her as the girl who sang on the original version of Teddybears' Yours To Keep, before they made the version with Neneh Cherry.

Paola was married to one of the Teddybears, although I can never remember which one, and released her debut album in 2002. Above The Candystore was the first single, and the best song on the album. Notice how the bassline is lovingly stolen from The Mamas & The Papas' California Dreaming.

Great songs of the 00s (Part 21)

I've been ranting about Christian Kjellvander lately, and I'm not gonna stop just yet. The man is a genius. I've posted one of his solo songs, and one from his f-ing brilliant side project Songs Of Soil.

Today you get a song by Loosegoats, the band he was in before he started going solo. Loosegoats were awesome and their last two albums Plains, Plateaus and Mountains (1999) and Her, The City Et Al (2001) are fantastic. Get them.

Great songs of the 00s (Part 20)

This time I'm gonna go ahead and recommend psychotic folk weirdos Quix*o*tic's The Breeze. It be badass. Beautiful and worrying in equal amounts.

The Ark's Bottleneck Barbiturate is damn good too, check that one out. This early on in their career, The Ark sounded quite a bit like Queen meets ABBA. Don't worry, I mean that in a good way.

(mp3) Lily Allen - Knock 'em out

The Friday MP3 Shuffle #82

I just realised there's been a shitload of Clutch and Torche on these mixes the last few months. I haven't heard any complaints so I'll keep going down that road.

This mix is dedicated to Taint, the pride of Wales (not that they have much else to be proud of, the cunts), who announced the other week they're splitting up after sixteens years together.

I made a post about them last year entitled "Why The Hell Don't More People Listen To Taint?", in which I rambled on about how unfair it was that they never achieved the success, the attention or the respect that many of their sludge metal peers got, despite being around for a lot longer than most of them and outrocking nearly all of them. You find that post here. Click it and download some quality Taint songs, including a whole gig from Roadburn 2008.

A lot of people only get the recognition they deserve after they're no longer around, so we can only hope that happens to Taint. Better late than never.

Rest in peace, Taint (that's a very strange sentence).

PS. Listen to the part between 2:23 and 2:40 in Burnt By The Sun's Goliath. That's sex in riff-form.

2. Motörhead - The wolf (1987)
3. earthlings? - Stungun (1998)

Great songs of the 00s (Part 19)

I mentioned the amazing Christian Kjellvander and his side-project Songs of Soil in yesterday's post, so I figured I'd post a Songs of Soil song as well.

Songs of Soil was a one-off project consisting of Christian, his brother Gustav and assorted members of Christian's band Loosegoats. Their only album The Painted Trees Of Ghostwood came out in 2000 and is a masterpiece. A masterpiece, I say.

Go get it, buy it, borrow it, steal it, I don't care. You need The Painted Trees Of Ghostwood in your life.

Also, who knew Dutch singer Anouk (that annoying Nobody's Wife broad from the late 90s) would ever have anything listenable to offer? Lo and behold, her 2007 album Who's Your Momma is, despite its cringe-worthy title, fucking great.

(mp3) Songs of Soil - Fire away
Available on The Painted Trees Of Ghostwood (2000)

(mp3) Anouk - Good god
Available on Who's Your Momma (2007)

(mp3) P.J. Harvey - Shame
Available on Uh Huh Her (2004)

(mp3) Håkan Hellström - Mitt Gullbergs kaj paradis
Available on Det Är Så Jag Säger Det (2002)

(mp3) Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Through the morning, through the night
Available on Raising Sand (2007)
