Giver of thanks

Happy thanksgiving!

Have fun overeating, drinking beer and watching football. It's not like you don't do that every week or anything. Only this time you're doing it surrounded by relatives you rarely see and don't like that much.

Happy thanksgiving!

The answer is you just grab it and jack away

It's always interesting how people find their way to your blog, and this case broke my heart. Some poor soul whose boyfriend has lost the bounce in his spring and she/he googles desperately for a solution.

I'm here to help: You just grab it and jack it for all it's worth.

Now here's Dick Hyman with the weather:

Great songs of the 00s (Part 54)

In this the 54th edition (!) I recommend Ed Harcourt's Apple Of My Eye from the Maplewood EP (superior to the later version on the Here Be Monsters album) and the worrying psycho-country blues of Jay Munly. That man should be in a straitjacket.

Great songs of the 00s (Part 51)

"Wow, what a great header pic!" you say.

Yes it is, I reply. It's of Song Kang-ho, one of the best actors in world, from the 2003 movie Memories of Murder. You should see it.

"Why?" you ask.

Because it's the best serial killer movie since Seven, that's why. It's creepy as fuck, but also absolutely hilarious. Dropkicking random people in a ditch = win.

Great songs of the 00s (Part 50)

I can't believe I've done fifty installment in this series. In other words, 250 songs from 250 albums. Well, to be fair Daft Punk's One More Time, Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway and The Flaming Lips' The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song got taken down by Mr. Web Sheriff, so 247.

And I still have shitloads of songs left to post before this feature is over. A great decade in music indeed.

By the way, can you identify the woman in the photo? I'll give you ten bucks if you get it right.

Amateurs borrow, geniuses steal.

I hope that's true in the case of Florence Valentine, as Pokerkväll I Vårby Gård is one of the phattest Clash rip-offs I've ever heard. Bankrobber, anyone?

You ever listen to K-Billy's Super Sounds of the 70s weekend?

How do you improve on a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack? Easy: you just make the soundtrack he would've wanted to make but was at the time unable to.

When his first film Reservoir Dogs came out in 1992 he was a rookie, a nobody with a cool script and little more. So when time came to compile the soundtrack the low budget didn't allow him to include all of the songs he wanted to, so he had to compromise and just include a handful.

With the character of radio DJ K-Billy, voiced by comedian Steven Wright, name-dropping all kinds of classic 70s tracks in the film Tarantino would've loved to have made the soundtrack album into a slammin' K-Billy's 70s Radio Hour instead of having to cut it short at a silly 30 minutes and including recent recordings to fill out the time. Seriously, who the fuck are Bedlam and why are they on the soundtrack? Tarantino hated having to include them.

I of course base these statements on absolutely nothing. All conjecture that I made up just now.

What I did was I took all of the 70s songs on the soundtrack and edited in all of the songs mentioned by K-Billy and the other characters in the film, thus making a perfect 50 minute K-Billy's Super Sounds Of The 70s playlist.

If you were able to step into the movie and turn on the radio, this is exactly what would be blaring out of the speakers and you would love every second.

Great songs of the 00s (Part 45)

Mark Lanegan has now been featured no less than three times in this never-ending series. Which means everything is in order.

Other highlights here include Nina Ramsby & Martin Hederos' Stänger Min Dörr, a Swedish cover of Betty Carter's Open The Door. Which you can listen to here.

I'm also very partial to RevoLucian's Bale Out!, the excellent dance remix of Christian Bale's tantrum on the set of Terminator: Salvation.
