The wonder that is Basia Bulat

Like I said in my Best Of 2010 post before Blogger took it down, Basia Bulat made the by far best album of last year with Heart of My Own. It hit me right in the heart and knocked me on my ass like no folk-y album had since Fleet Foxes' debut album two years prior.

Marry me and have my children, Basia.

This is a genuine offer. Basia, if you read this, think it over. Take your time with it, and leave a comment with your response.

16 Horsepower galore

I just found this brilliant documentary on David Eugene Edwards (16 Horsepower/Wovenhand) on YouTube and I had to share it.

It was made for Dutch television in 2000 and not only contains some very interesting chats with the guy, we also get to meet his son, his wife and his grandfather and see some absolutely stunning live performances, including the best version of Strawfoot (off of Secret South) I've ever heard.

Great Songs Of The 00s (Part 66)

Why aren't Cherry Ghost superstars? Why aren't they as big as Coldplay, or even bigger? Why did they never get an Arctic Monkeys/Glasvegas/Arcade Fire hype? Because the world ain't fucking fair, that's probably why.

I saw Requiem For A Dream for the first and only time in the fall of 2003. It was the lowest point of my life so far (for reasons which shall remain untold) and watching Requiem For A Dream at that point was not a good idea.

As a result, hearing Clint Mansell's score gave me an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of my stomach for the following seven years. Thank you, Pavlov.

It's only in the last few months I've been able to distance myself from that part of my life and appreciate the soundtrack for the meisterwerk it truly is.

Songs That Get My Juices Flowing #54

I'm still getting accustomed to Kings Of Leon's current sound.

I first got to know them eight years ago and still see them as The Strokes' inbred cousins from the bayou. That Coldplay-ish/Arcade Fire-esque arena rock shit they got going now remains a bit of a shock. I'm sure I'll warm up to it though. In a decade or two.

PS. Roy Bailey ftw.

(mp3) Ed Harcourt - I've become misguided

(mp3) Roy Bailey - Poverty knock
